Trinity United Church
Gravenhurst, Ontario

Quick Links

In 1877 a new church, the Gravenhurst Methodist, was opened by Rev. John Pepper.  Forty five years later, in 1922 and 3 years before the creation of the United Church of Canada,  the Gravenhurst Methodist became Gravenhurst United.  In 1927 the congregation voted to rename the church Trinity United.

The original church burned on January 30, 1926 and in just six months the congregation rallied together to build the church that still stands today, reopening on August 8th.  This is a feat that probably could not be repeated.

Within the Church there are a number of beautiful works of art.  The balcony tapestry and the Dossal curtain were designed by Marie Aiken and stitched with love by the women of the congregation.  The Dossal curtain also had artistic input from Michael Cleary, Richard Green and Sandra Orr.

The carvings in the chancel area were designed by Bruce Brown and carved by the Valley City Furniture Co.  Hilary Cole designed and created the metal communion candles.  Both these works incorporate meaningful symbolism to the congregation and the church.

The stained glass over the side entrance was donated by Ross Ashforth in loving memory of his first and second wives.  It is an evocative Muskoka piece and equisite in design.

Outside a sculpture of brass and aluminum was created by Richard Green.  Modern in design with a timeless theme:  "Into the middle of the world and into the middle of man, comes the Son of God".

For a comprehensive report on Trinity, our congregation and Muskoka community read the JNAC report that was created in 2008.
